Kayak Granite Bay
3 day kayaking tour on Northern Quadra Island
Experience an unforgettable two nights, three day kayak expedition on the rugged and enchanting northwest side of Quadra Island. The history, seclusion and beautiful landscape of this region make it a magical location for your sea kayak adventures. Exploration through this historical region combined with superb coastal paddling makes this a trip to remember!
The Area
As you enter the sheltered waters of Granite Bay, you may find it hard to imagine it as a thriving community of over 500 people in the early 1900s. Granite Bay served as a base for one of the largest logging operations in the district. Union Steamships made regular stops here to deliver supplies, mail and passengers to the settlement. Today, as population continues to grow in the more southern communities on the island, Granite Bay is left as a secluded setting away from the busy hustle and bustle of life. Today, it is an ideal launching point to explore the remote wilderness of this northern region, including Small Inlet Marine Provincial Park.
Camping and Dining
Your two night, three day kayak expedition will base camp at Orchard Bay, found tucked into the northeast corner of Kanish Bay. Orchard Bay offers idyllic camping steeped in history. Once the site of a prosperous First Nations village, this ancient midden is now covered by overgrown meadows and wild orchards.
The plum and apple trees are laden with fruit in season, and a small creek brings fresh water down to the shell and pebble beach, abundant with squirting clams and oysters at low tide. The west facing bay offers superb sunset views, delightful meadow camping and provides easy access to explore the archipelago of chained islands towards Discovery Passage (day one) and the picturesque paddle to the head of Small Inlet (day two)
The food on our expeditions is an area in which we take great pride. We make every effort to make your meals as breathtaking as the beauty of the surrounding scenery, incorporating the best of local ingredients, and the plentiful bounty of the ocean. The abundant seafood available in the area will provide the base for many of our entrees, and local fruits and vegetables will be used in the preparation of every meal. Guides are inspired by the art of wilderness gourmet, and take great pleasure in the challenge of preparing creative and inspiring meals. They will take good care of you and your tummy!
Other Activities
Small Inlet Marine Provincial Park surrounded by lush forest and abundant with wildlife, is ideal territory for exploration by foot. Once at the head of the inlet we will land the kayaks and journey by foot on the early First Nations portage trail which meanders through second-growth forest, past ancient middens to the lovely pebble beach in Wiatt Bay, overlooking the Octopus Islands for lunch. Another land based highlight of the trip could include a pleasant 1.6 km hike through first and second growth forest to Newton Lake for the possibility of a refreshing warm water swim.
